History of Laurel Hill
Rebecca Rawle, a wealthy widow, built this small country house in the Georgian style around 1767.
After her second marriage to British Loyalist and Philadelphia mayor Samuel Shoemaker, she lost her house when it was seized during the American Revolution. Regaining ownership of this house became her life’s passion.
